Carotid ultrasound, also known as carotid duplex ultrasonography (CUS), is an imaging and diagnostic technique for assessment and diagnosis of carotid artery diseases. Carotid artery diseases are characterized by blockage of carotid arteries due to accumulation of fat, cholesterol, and other substances which often results in stenosis of carotid arteries, leading to stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. The carotid ultrasound technology uses sound waves to produce images of carotid arteries which enables health care providers to diagnose any blockage of arteries by analyzing the macroscopic appearances of fat depositions and flow characteristics. Carotid duplex ultrasonography (CUS) is a highly reliable diagnostic imaging technique and is well accepted by patients suffering from the fear of closed spaces, especially during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Carotid ultrasound imaging has no radiation risks to patients and is safer than conventional angiography technique. Various clinical trials conducted across the world, including the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial and Asymptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis Trial, have successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of the carotid ultrasound imaging technique. Various health care organizations have established guidelines and best clinical practices for health care providers across the world for the use of carotid ultrasound imaging technique.
Increase in incidence of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, myocardial infraction, and other disorders; technological advances in the ultrasound imaging equipment and techniques; growing adoption of the carotid ultrasound imaging technique among health care providers across the world, rise in awareness among general population regarding early diagnosis, and ongoing clinical trials leading to new application areas for the imaging and diagnostic techniques are expected to drive the global carotid ultrasound imaging market during the forecast period. However, lack of uniformity in reimbursement policies regarding the use of the technique in several countries is expected to restrain the market during the forecast period.
